This version of Dracula was released in after no small amount of hype within the geek community. A short comic book adaptation beautifully drawn by Mike Mignola heralded its arrival, for example.

Mignola also contributed production design and storyboards to the project. And yet I keep going back to it.

Oldman and Waits are incredibly magnetic in their work, and while the production feels weirdly flat it has some grandiose, incredible visuals.

One is that the video cannot be embedded. But for a free film, neither is a dealbreaker. Comment Now! Web design by Pro Blog Design. And boy did it look good.

After doing all that myself, I had to admire and respect what it took to create a whole movie full of magic like that.

Gary Oldman sells the part of Dracula very well. From his tragic beginning, you had to feel something for him.

You couldn't just narrow him down into just "the bad guy". He lost something really precious to him and you sympathized with him immediately.

Everyone else plays their part well. I bought the Ultra HD version of this. It is a beautiful transfer with a lot of detailed and reworked colors for some scenes.

Can't wait to get more 4K titles. Watch this imagining of a classic literary character, today. Dracula is one of my favorite films so if this review is biased it's only because I think that highly of it.

Gary Oldman's performance is off the charts. I'd say he contends for best horror villain of all time in this film.

The cinematography, effects and lighting are all as good as any film I've ever seen. The sexuality in the film is almost constantly present, but it's done extraordinarily well.

So while some films with a lot of sexual content come across as exploitative, this feels like a work of art. The only negative I could possibly think of is Keanu's performance and his accent is a little rough, so while I am a fan of his, it does detract slightly.

But everything else is just top tier film making.. One of my all time favorite movies, Gary Oldman turns in the performance of a lifetime on this film.

I've seen him in many movies, some of which were not that memorable. But in Dracula, he really made a fan out of me.

I love the costumes, the sets, the film locations, ALL the other actors, the story and the general look and feel of the movie. My girlfriend and I visited the Francis Ford Coppola winery this past summer, and adjacent to the tasting room there's a glass enclosed 'set' featuring large photographs, some of the costumes and set decorations from this movie, as are there other areas containing the same sort of things from other Coppola movies.

If you haven't been there Sonoma Valley , it's worth the trip. I really like the transfer to Blu-Ray of this movie. It brightened up some of the darker scenes but does NOT make things look artificial or overly bright looking.

The color, I think, is much better too. I love this movie! Originally saw it when it came out in theaters, but hadn't seen it anywhere since, but always thought about how mesmerizing it was - so decided to order a copy for myself.

Watched again and was thrilled all over again bonus - I had forgotten some things so it was like watching it anew in some aspects , but the music, the costumes, the cinematography, are all haunting and put you into some sort of a dream world, the acting is totally on point, the story is scary as you would expect from a Dracula movie, but also a love story, and I would say that Anthony Hopkins' character brings a little humor into it, to break up the horror, but all the actors are really amazing.

This collector's edition also has many other features that I look forward to watching, but haven't yet, including "watch the movie with Francis Ford Coppola", which I look forward to.

Highly recommend! This from a Dracula obsessed person who repeatedly checked out the book Dracula from the public library in the 70's when I was a kid.

See all reviews from the United States. Top international reviews. Translate all reviews to English. The picture was not as good as I hoped for.

Very dark compared with ordinary DVD already in my collection. Although I was disappointed, I have to say that the extras were excellent and so my disappointment abated.

Overall I was happy with the purchase after all but upgrading to 4K doesn't always work well, disappointingly.

It is a very "hit and miss" occupation as I have come to realise. Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote.

Please try again. I believe that Bram Stoker's Dracula might be the most mixed films ever created. At times its chilling and gothic like it should be, yet at times it is like a bad, LSD induced comedy.

Theres many good things. Gary Oldman is excellent as he always is and basically carries the film as the tortured yet creepy count. Kilar's score is fantastic and really deserves to be in a better adaptation than this.

The costumes are lavish and striking to view, adding a good gothic feel to procedings. Visually the film is a treat to the eyes with lots of really good eerie effects especially in the castle.

Sadie Frost is also very good as the seductive Lucy. Unlike many i can put up with the love story and feel it adds more interest.

The issue is theres a lot holding this back. Keanu Reeves is horrifyingly bad here, i've seen planks of wood with more charisma!

He's so wooden he may as well be a tree and his now infamous 'english accent' had me questioning if his involvment was some kind of sick joke.

Winoa Ryder is very bad too. She just doesn't know how to convey emotion properly and when she tries too it's always far too over-the-top.

Anthony Hopkins just hams it up as Van Helshing and it comes across as ridiculous See the scene were he humps Billy Campbell's leg.

The story is too muddled and confusing at times when it should have stuck closer to its source. Its sad because the film had so much potential and never achieved greatness like it could have.

I'd advise you to try it, its just hard to say whether or not the positives outweigh the negatives. Originally intended as a TV production by Michael Apted, who stayed on as executive producer, Coppola's film may be a long way from his best work but at least is a welcome throwback to the days when big pictures took risks.

Most of these are in terms of style, but for once this does not mean the designer gloss of the mainstream blockbuster.

This at least gives the punter something different. Filmed entirely in a studio, there are some quite wonderful visuals.

Bite marks become the eyes of a wolf, a peacock's 'eye' becomes a train tunnel, a train in the extreme background casts a shadow over a journal superimposed over the foreground while unseen eyes edge into frame on the blood red sky, all to the accompaniment of Wojciech Kilar's stridently foreboding score.

Stoker's novel is told in the form of various letters and journals and Coppola's interest in toys and turn of the century technology not for nothing did he call his company American Zoetrope finds expression in the various forms used by the main characters to record events - journal, typewriter, phonogram - and with the inclusion of an early Kinematograph introduced by a street scene shot in the style of an early Lumiere camera at a jerky 18fps.

Indeed, the whole film owes much to early cinema with its use of fades to iris and expressionistic touches.

The castle is straight out of Cocteau with the odd nod to Caligari and Escher in its impossible gravity.

The Count's shadow has a life of its own and betrays his true intentions. Revelling in it's sense of the purely cinematic, many of the effects seem to be designed not to create the illusion of reality but the illusion of illusion.

Venereal diseases, diseases of the blood and dark desires are all interwoven with rather more skill than usual for the tale.

Yet despite some very sexual blood sucking and one of the most beautiful love themes of the past decade that harks back to the days when Hollywood composers came from Hungary it is less effective as a love story than the under-rated Frank Langella version.

Nonetheless, those sexual fantasies on display perfectly reflect those of the period it is set in, a cross between the European brothel and dirty postcards of the turn of the century, while the film manages to touch on the fear of cultural contamination by foreigners implicit in the book.

Gary Oldman impresses as the Count in his various guises of medieval hero, embittered old man and mittle European romantic, a man who can throw a baby to his brides to feed on or turn tears to a diamond.

There is something about Van Helsing that tends to bring out the worst in actors, and if Anthony Hopkins isn't as dizzyingly awful as Laurence Olivier he still veers sharply towards ham.

Richard E. Grant not Renfield, surprisingly enough is comparatively restrained, although in his case that simply means barking rather than baying at the moon, while Tom Waits is surprisingly good as Renfield and Keanu Reeves' much mocked accent is quite acceptable, as is his performance as Harker though quite how Winona Ryder's atrocious Anglish Arksunt got a free pass is beyond me.

Fascinating, occasionally frustrating and frequently very striking, Coppola may sometimes lose sight of the narrative with his stylistic thrust, but this doesn't disgrace itself when compared with Lugosi, Lee version and Nosferatu.

While the single-disc edition doesn't offer as much in the way of extras as the 2-disc edition which reportedly has regraded the colour in some scenes , it's not completely free of extras.

As well as the trailer and a costume design gallery, a rather sanitized view of Coppola at work is offered in the accompanying documentary, Bloodlines, with none of the drug abuse, madness and rampant egotism so prevalent in Hearts of Darkness.

Instead, it's a straightforward promotional short with a heavy emphasis on the pre-production rehearsals. We do get Gary Oldman singing Sinatra songs and otherwise behaving oddly at almost every opportunity and Anthony Hopkins does point out that he thinks rehearsal is pointless in films, but this is more interested in putting bums on seats than showing you what really happens on a movie set.

Gore fans will be disappointed to note that the special effects side gets short shrift here, but it is well put-together.

Bram Stoker's Dracula. R2 18cert, two disc DVD. Collector's edition. The picture quality's great 1. The bug eating lunatic asylum parts are excellent, caged heads and grime.

I like this flick quite a lot, greatest vampire film? Near Dark. Apparently our U. S R1 version is cut, about time we had a bit of luck.

Not watched extras. Run time: 2hr 2min. After watching this movie and then watching Interview With the Vampire, I have come to one conclusion; vampire movies are just not my cup of tea.

It's a good movie but it's just not my taste.

Einfach sehr, sehr gut gemacht. Beide sind hier nicht wirklich die Bringer. Bei beiden, Reeves und Ryder, sind die Stimmen extrem unpassend ausgesucht worden.
