While it had clearly struck a chord with some, the problem faced by Netflix was the galaxy-high budget attached to such intricate world-creation.

Its failure, taken along with dismal box office results for Valerian and Blade Runner last year, also indicates a larger genre problem.

Unless it benefits from tried and tested franchise recognition hello Star Wars , ambitious, universe-building science fiction is unlikely to break out beyond hardcore fans.

The success of more grounded shows like Black Mirror and The Man in the High Castle offers further proof of what a wider audience actually wants to see.

Takeshi Kovacs is a violent mercenary who wakes up years after his sleeve is killed to find the world a very different place and himself in a very different body, that of the House of Cards and The Killing actor Joel Kinnaman.

It feels like something that might have been cast aside by Paul Verhoeven, who would have probably found the lack of social commentary a bit too tame for his tastes.

The spectacle might grow stale but for now, the flash is blinding. Facebook Twitter Pinterest.

This season is more akin to a James Bond story. Kovacs finds himself fighting to unravel the threads of a dangerous plot before those threads strangle him.

Everything goes wrong for Kovacs right from the start and the result is a fast paced ride through a compelling story of ghosts, love, fear, ambition, retribution, crimes, history, and loss.

As always the series reflects on what it even means to be human in a world where consciousness has been digitised. We can be transferred from sleeve to sleeve or beamed across the stars, but can we still retain what makes us who we are?

Series 2 delves even deeper into the world, exploring things we only got the tiniest taste of in season 1.

Each of the actors old and new does a fantastic job, and the writing is excellent. The only sin this tv show has committed so far is that it's too good for this world, and I can't shake the feeling that shortsighted corporate bean counters are going to pull the plug on it eventually.

I'm a sucker for sci-fi, particularly sci-fi that explores issues in non-idiotic ways. Altered Carbon is the rare show that accomplishes this - yes, including in this second season.

I definitely missed the actor from season 1, and was skeptical about Mackie - but he won me over. He's not I'm a sucker for sci-fi, particularly sci-fi that explores issues in non-idiotic ways.

He's not terribly charismatic and the humor was definitely not there like the first season, but he was solid and toed the line between being convincingly tough and also capable of displaying emotion that conveys to the viewer.

I found him watchable and was rooting for him - so he did his job. So that's a big win. And at moments it gets close to poignant.

I do need to watch season 1 again for comparison to see if I agree with the consensus here about a drop in quality. But I do remember the last episode being so dumb I stopped watching it - which didn't happen here.

So while it perhaps does not quite reach the heights of season 1, it also doesn't descend to the same depths. Edit: just watched season 1 again.

Can confirm there is a definitive drop in the quality of the cinematography, and a slight one for the writing. In contrast season 2 comes off like a WB show, as other reviewers have noted.

So not a great look, but still watchable. Cobthecrazed Feb 27, Meh, after the first couple of episodes. Mackie plays a very stiff Kovacs, Who seems much more interested in being sarcastic than actually accomplishing anything.

Gilchrist starts out very annoying, and continues along that route as they try to figure out why her brain is messed up!

Chemistry between the two is virtually non-existent. Thinking there really shooting more for a politically correct version of altered carbon in season two, and having a storyline that actually makes any sense!

You'll watch it, and you'll watch it till the end of the season, but you won't walk away with any real feeling! What a sterile piece of a tv show.

I literally felt nothing when watching this, nothing for the actors or even the story or setting.

Action scenes were like of those from 90s trash movies and tv shows, there is just no any forward momentum for a viever to watch because all he gets is dissapointment.

Skydance make another bollywood trash. Same as last Terminator, Gemini Man or 6 Underground. If you want really good story, buy a book.

Altered Carbon: Season 2 Review

On the planet Latimer, reawakened Takeshi Kovacs must protect a teenage tattooist named Holly while investigating the death of a yakuza boss alongside Gina, a strangely familiar no-nonsense CTAC agent.

An anthology series exploring a twisted, high-tech multiverse where humanity's greatest innovations and darkest instincts collide.

Ten years before Kirk, Spock, and the Enterprise, the USS Discovery discovers new worlds and lifeforms as one Starfleet officer learns to understand all things alien.

ALTERED CARBON is set in a future where consciousness is digitized and stored in cortical stacks implanted in the spine, allowing humans to survive physical death by having their memories and consciousness "re-sleeved" into new bodies.

The story follows specially trained "Envoy" soldier Takeshi Kovacs, who is downloaded from an off-world prison and into a combat ready sleeve at the behest of Laurens Bancroft, a highly influential aristocrat.

Bancroft was killed, and the last automatic backup of his stack was made hours before his death, leaving him with no memory of who killed him and why.

While police ruled it a suicide, Bancroft is convinced he was murdered and wants Kovacs to find out the truth.

What stands out right from the start is the worldbuilding. Many of the characters have complicated backstories that are crucial to the plot, and the rich history of their world is equally important, but what this series does remarkably well is show rather than tell.

Instead of relying on lengthy monologues for exposition which have a tendency to weigh a story down and make the narrative lose momentum, we get the clues we need via flashbacks or just by seeing and learning about this world through the eyes of the protagonists.

And what a world it is: the production values are insane, especially considering this is a TV show.

There is so much eye candy for a sci-fi nerd like me; nearly every shot is packed with such an abundance of visual information that I had to hit pause several times to take it all in.

But the world of 'Altered Carbon' isn't just "decorated" with visual effects and future tech to make it look cool though it DOES look very cool ; everything we see has a function and is there for a reason.

It feels real and has that "lived-in" look that even big-budget Hollywood productions rarely get right.

What I should probably also mention is that this is a hard R-rated show if this were a feature film, it would actually perhaps be closer to a NC than an R which doesn't hold back in terms of sex and violence.

Also, if you're not familiar with the genre or used to a more straight forward narrative where everything is explained to you, 'Altered Carbon' may initially feel a bit confusing or even overwhelming, because you're being thrown head first into a strange new world where you - like the protagonist - have to process an overload of information in order to get a sense of orientation.

Stick with it though, and things will start to become clearer. As for the plot itself, I won't give anything away here; it's enough to know that it starts with the protagonist being brought back from "retirement" to solve a murder mystery.

But unlike the grand daddy of all cyberpunk films, 'Blade Runner', this has less of a brooding, "noir" vibe to it; instead it's an action-heavy, at times pulpy but very densely plotted story with lots of colorful characters and so much going on that it doesn't drag for a second.

To sum it all up: for sci-fi and cyberpunk fans this show is a must; for all other carbon-based life-forms, well, it may not be an "altering" experience, and it certainly isn't perfect, but if you don't give up after the first couple of episodes you could be in for a nice surprise.

Rosario D. Cyberpunk hat its best.

Fazit: Handwerklich top, Kinnaman stark, erzählerisch schwach. Theodor K. Und DAS ist vermutlich noch viel zu optimistisch
